Junior golfers to play with pros
Five of Hawaii’s junior golfers will be paired up with top-ranked PGA Tour pros Jan. 8 in the Acura Hawaii-Pro Junior Skills Challenge during the Sony Open.
The Hawaii juniors picked to play are Allisen Corpuz (freshman at Punahou, participant in the 2010 contest), Skye Inakoshi (senior at Mid-Pacific), Mariel Galdiano (freshman at Punahou), Eimi Koga (senior at Moanalua, second appearance in the challenge), Colby Takushi (Pearl City golfer).
Last year’s competition was won by Punahou junior Zachary Takano-Braunthal who teamed up with PGA Tour pro Zach Johnson.
Liska to join UH men’s tennis team
Pavel Liska was added to the University of Hawaii men’s tennis roster Wednesday, head coach John Nelson announced.
A native of the Czech Republic, Liska was ranked No. 89 in the world junior rankings and No. 2 in his country. Coming to UH after playing on the International Tennis Federation tour, Liska joins the program in time for their first match in 2013 against Duke on Jan. 9 at the UH Tennis Complex.
Vulcans fall short at the buzzer
Hawaii Hilo’s CJ Brown’s floater rimmed out as St. Edward’s (Texas) escaped with a 77-75 men’s basketball victory on Wednesday in Hilo.
Michael Melonas paced the Vulcans (1-8) with 23 points on 11-for-14 shooting, while Mychael Hearn scored 16 and Kiel Myers added 13.
Zillijan Jones led the Hilltoppers (10-6) with 20 points.
Sea Warriors lose tourney finale
Malte Ziegenhagen scored 18 points, but it wasn’t enough as Hawaii Pacific dropped the final game of the HPU Classic men’s basketball tournament to Upper Iowa 83-63 on Wednesday at Bloch Arena.
Ziegenhagen added seven rebounds for the Sea Warriors (2-5), who were outscored by 19 points in the second half.
Sam Elgin paced the Peacocks (8-3) with 19 points.
