A man in his 70s was critically injured when he apparently was run over by a city bus in Waikiki on Saturday, the third serious pedestrian collision in three days and the second involving a city bus.

Witnesses told police that the man was attempting to enter the bus through one of two side doors when the bus pulled away, causing him to fall to the ground.

The incident occurred just after 1 p.m. at a bus stop on the 1800 block of Ala Moana Boulevard, across the street from Kobe Japanese Steak House.

The man suffered injuries consistent with the bus running over his legs, according to Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

The man, who has a Waikiki address, was conscious after the incident and briefly spoke with police before paramedics took him to the Queen’s Medical Center.

Towne said police will review surveillance video from the bus as part of the investigation.

Police closed two westbound lanes to investigate.

The incident came two days after two pedestrians were killed in separate collisions.

Fifty-five-year-old Dominador Aguiar Jr. of Kalihi died after he was struck by a city bus while crossing North King Street near Gulick Avenue around 4:35 a.m. Thursday.

Aguiar was in a crosswalk when he was hit. He died at the scene.

Police said wet roads and rain in the area may have contributed to the incident.

The bus driver was identified as a 54-year-old man with seven years of experience.

Later that day, 79-year-old Kailua resident Alicia Moreno was fatally injured when she was struck by a 2001 Toyota multipurpose vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old woman, while walking home from the YMCA. Moreno was transported to nearly Castle Medical Center, where she later died.

Moreno was attempting to cross Kailua Road, near the Kailua 7-Eleven, when the car hit her.

Thursday’s deaths were the 30th and 31st Oahu traffic fatalities this year, compared with 34 at the same time last year.
