Puppy mill manager gets six months, not ordered to pay Humane Society

A state judge sentenced the former manager of a Waimanalo dog breeding facility to six months in jail this morning for 153 counts of animal cruelty.

With credit for the time he has already spent in custody since his arrest in June, David Lee Becker, 55, will be released from custody as soon as state prison officials receive the judgement and verify that Becker has already served the six months and has no other cases pending.

Circuit Judge Glenn Kim refused the state’s request to order Becker to repay the Hawaiian Humane Society the $370,701 it spent to care for the 153 dogs it rescued from squalid conditions in February 2010 because he said the Humane Society is not a direct victim of the animal cruelty.
