Maui’s now-closed Stella Blues Cafe and owner Kale Boverman have filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation.
According to U.S. Bankruptcy Court records, Boverman is listed as a co-debtor on the restaurant’s filing, which also cites an eviction proceeding against the restaurant by Ronin Properties currently pending in Wailuku District Court.
Among the restaurant’s creditors holding unsecured claims, Ronin Properties is owed delinquent lease rent of nearly $310,000 dating to 2013.
Restaurant assets are estimated at $63,500, while debt is calculated at $693,438.
Boverman, meanwhile, lists assets of $589,262, including a Kihei home valued at $585,000, and estimates liabilities at $727,257.
His largest creditor is Greentree Mortgage, holder of the first mortgage, while Wells Fargo has a second mortgage claim of nearly $88,400.
According to MauiWeekly.com, Boverman’s parents, Ray and Janie Ennis, opened the Grateful Dead-themed Stella Blues Cafe in Kihei in 1991. Boverman and his hanai sister, Cindy Anton-Eiting, reportedly took over restaurant operations after the 2009 death of Ray Ennis, and ran it until the restaurant’s closure April 27.
Boverman’s bankruptcy attorney did not return a call seeking comment.
