KAILUA-KONA » Hawaii officials have reopened a closed beach on the Big Island’s Kona coast after determining an unidentified 150-pound object was a mooring.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources said Friday it reopened the Kua Bay section of the Kekaha Kai State Park north of the Kailua-Kona airport.

The state had closed the area as a precaution and called in a Navy explosive ordnance disposal expert to examine the object after it was found in the water.

The department says unexploded ordnance has been found in nearby waters before. The object was about two feet in diameter.

State Parks Administrator Dan Quinn had said it was best to close the park and not allow surfers and others into the water for their own safety.
