North Dakota bumped Hawaii out of first place in the 2013 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.

Hawaii held the top spot for the previous four years and was No. 2 in 2008 when the survey was first conducted.

This year’s survey, released Thursday, is based on more than 178,000 interviews with American adults across all 50 states, conducted from January-December 2013. Each state is ranked on the basis of six sub-indexes: life evaluation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors, and access to basic necessities.

Hawaii was pulled down by work environment, where it ranked 42nd. Work environment measures job satisfaction, ability to use strengths at work, treatment by your supervisor, and having an open and trusting work environment.

Dan Witters, the author of the report told HuffPost, Hawaii had a nearly 13 percent drop in supervisor treatment.
