MAKAWAO, Hawaii >> The nesting nene family that prompted the closure of a Maui campground has lost its young gosling.

Haleakala National Park officials closed the Hosmer Grove campground and trail on Friday to protect the family of endangered Hawaiian geese. Park Chief of Interpretation Pauline Angelakis says when workers tried to move the family to a safer location on Saturday morning, they found the gosling was dead.

The gosling was less than two weeks old. A necropsy will be done to determine why it died.

Hosmer Grove re-opened on Saturday.

Last month, a nesting nene was struck and killed by a car at the park.

Maui’s only public rifle range remains closed temporarily because a nene nest was found in the area.
