Working on the railroad once again
The legal fights against the rail project have seemed so gargantuan that its hard to believe they could be over. At least for now, that is what the opponents of the project say: They are done with the court system as the field of battle.
Now all thats left is to build the project, all 20 miles of it, on time and within budget allowances, while hoping that the corporate dramas involving a major contractor settle down. Insert plaintive sigh here.
Wait a minute: Thats not all. The rail authority has to start thinking about operating it, too, and doing so in efficient coordination with the citys bus system. Miles to go before we sleep, taxpayers, miles to go.
DOE investigation takes longer than criminal one
Were all for due process, but this is ridiculous. Special-education teacher Janice Fontes was arrested last May in a meth-trafficking case, pleaded guilty in August and was sentenced this week to 57 months in prison, a term shell begin serving in April. Yet, as of the day she was sentenced, the state Department of Education had yet to complete the internal investigation it began after placing Fontes on leave after her arrest.
This disgraced educator admitted her pivotal role in an interstate drug enterprise last August. She should have been fired then.
