10 escape house fire in Hauula
An early morning house fire forced 10 people to flee for their lives Sunday in Windward Oahu.
"They ran from the back of their house," said neighbor Regina Pasi. "They just had whatever they had on their backs. I’m glad they’re OK."
The one-story house in Hauula was occupied by a family, including three children, and various relatives, Fire Department spokesman Capt. James Todd said.
Pasi said that when she woke up and stepped outside Sunday morning, she saw the fire spreading quickly from the front to the back of the house, only about 30 feet away.
Luckily, she said, the wind was blowing the fire away from her own home.
As a precaution, her family members used a hose to wet down her house, she said.
Todd said the fire caused $350,000 in damage to the structure and $40,000 to the contents.
The Red Cross was called in to assist the family, which has relatives in the area, authorities and friends said.
The fire at 54-148 Kawaipuna St. took nearby 30 minutes to control after the initial alarm at 5:24 a.m. Firefighters took more than an hour to extinguish the blaze.
A man in his 60s suffered a small burn on an arm but refused medical attention, Todd said.
Todd said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
