Four-Ball tournament at Makalena coming up
A year ago, Pearl City High School seniors Schyler Murakami and Colby Takushi scorched Ted Makalena’s back nine — shooting 28 — to win the Hawaii State Golf Association Four-Ball Championship.
This year’s seventh annual Four-Ball event is up for grabs, beginning with the A and B flights Sunday. The championship flight tees off March 1 and all flights conclude March 2.
Takushi and Murakami had six birdies on the back nine last year to beat John Oda and Jared Sawada — who went on to win the 2013 State Amateur Stroke Play and Match Play titles later in the year — by a shot.
Among the 20-plus teams in the championship flight this year are Shawn Lu and Kyosuke Hara, Tyler Ota and Matthew Ma, Kaci Masuda and Mari Nishiura, Brittany and Freddy Fan and Donny Hopoi and Landon Chung.
Hopoi won this title in 2011 and 2012, with Jared Flores.
Golfers tee off starting at 7 a.m. each day.
Volunteers needed for junior day
The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association is looking for volunteers for its third annual Junior Golf Day, March 22 at sites on all the major islands. The event is free for juniors ages 5 to 18. The first 40 to register online for each site receive a free tee gift.
The event runs from 9 to 11 a.m., with check-in at 8. Local PGA and LPGA pros will run the clinics.
Volunteers are needed to assist with registration, distribute snacks and tee prizes and help with organization.
