Gretchen Morrison picked the right time to catch fire.
The struggling sharpshooter connected on five 3-pointers, including a go-ahead trey with 1:11 left in overtime, and scored 19 points as Southlake Carroll (Texas) rallied past ‘Iolani 50-49 on Saturday at the ‘Iolani Classic girls tournament.
"Hey, why not have an overtime game with the home team," coach Teri Morrison said. "When Gretchen (no relation) is on, it’s over," said Morrison, in her 29th year as head coach.
Southlake finished third in the annual tournament thanks to timely shooting by Morrison. The 5-foot-9 junior misfired on five of her first six tries from the arc, but nailed three clutch treys in the second half, plus the OT bomb over ‘Iolani’s zone defense.
"I started off slow, but when I started to play great defense, it all fell into rhythm. It helps to have a great point guard," said Morrison, who was 5-for-12 from deep.
Point guard Kennedy Leonard, who drilled three treys, added 13 points.
Alex Masaquel led the Raiders (4-3) with 18 points and 11 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. Abrianna Johnson-Edwards had 13 points, but was held scoreless in the final quarter and overtime.
"We went to a scramble defense," Morrison said of her 1-2-2 matchup look. "(Johnson-Edwards) is a really good player who can slash. We needed a lot more help defense."
The Lady Dragons also went to a bigger lineup, using 6-1 sophomore Madison Drescher (10 rebounds, three blocks) prominently. But the difference-maker was Morrison.
‘Iolani led 37-30 late in the third quarter, but Morrison hit two treys to help give her team a 39-38 lead. Pua Kahalehoe gave ‘Iolani a 43-41 lead with a 3-pointer, but Leonard tied it with a layup.
The Raiders had the ball with 9.4 seconds remaining in regulation, but Johnson-Edwards missed a driving layup and Drescher swatted a putback try at the buzzer by Masaquel.
The game was tied at 45 when Morrison was left open again and swished a 3-pointer to give Southlake a 48-45 lead with 1:11 to go in overtime.
The Pioneers saw a 40-29 lead dwindle in the fourth quarter before they pulled out a win for the tournament championship.
Siena Shupe scored 10 points to lead the Spartans over Jing Ling High School (China) in a consolation game.
