Steering is one of the most respected — and often shunned — tasks among the duties delegated to outrigger canoe paddlers.
Not only do steerspeople guide their respective canoes along various courses while dealing with ocean swells and currents, but they also serve as paddlers expected to pull their weight while keeping the vessel straight.
Makana Dayton represents a fresh generation of youth paddlers learning the craft from coaches, family members and friends while perpetuating one of the state’s iconic sports.
While his skills continue to improve with every practice session and race, perhaps the most impressive of Dayton’s accomplishments is that he is holding his own at just 8 years old.
Keiki usually start competing in non-exhibition events at age 12, but Dayton has honed his skills since taking up the sport at age 4. He became the youngest paddler within the ranks of nearly 3,000 paddlers representing the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association’s 18 clubs to compete in an official event this year, and steered Keola O Ke Kai Canoe Club’s Boys 14 crew to a fourth-place finish among six competitors — Outrigger won the quarter-mile race — as part of OHCRA’s annual Leeward Kai Father’s Day Regatta held in calm, glassy waters fronting Nanakuli Beach Park on Sunday.
"As I’ve gotten better, I’ve been able to learn new things in paddling," said Dayton. "I’ve been learning to steer since the first day of this summer season. The goal I have is to do the best I can every race."
The race course afforded paddlers the opportunity to use slight ocean swells to their advantage. In most regattas, including those held at Keehi Lagoon, canoes follow a course running parallel to the shore. However, at Nanakuli, paddlers raced away from and back to shore, and catching waves, or "bumps," became a vital aspect of race strategy.
"I’m with my whole family having fun at the beach on a hot summer day," Dayton said after successfully navigating the course.
Dayton has an experienced support system buoying his growth as a paddler, including his parents, Gino Dayton and Jen Romano, who founded the club in 2001 and continue to coach its paddlers.
"I’m a proud father; paddling teaches him leadership at an early age and shows him what we go through," said Gino, who was presented with a Father’s Day card from the entire club prior to the regatta. "Steering is very crucial in a crew because you need to learn to read the water and anticipate what the canoe is going to do within the surroundings and the elements. By the time he reaches 15 or 16 years old, his water knowledge will be very advanced."
Defending OHCRA champion Hui Nalu continued its success on the water, as the Hawaii Kai-based club amassed 177 points on 13 race victories to claim the AAA division (27-39 crews entered) while fending off Kailua (157 points), Outrigger (139 points) and Lanikai (113 points).
Hui Nalu, which also won the regatta in 2013, raced out to a 134-120 advantage over Kailua through the first 32 events, while Outrigger remained in the hunt with 113 points. Hui Nalu won two of the next four races to extend its lead and extinguish any hopes of a Kailua comeback.
Keahiakahoe dominated the AA division (14-26 crews entered) on the heels of four victories, and amassed 73 points. Leeward Kai (46 points) and Waikiki Surf Club (35 points) rounded out the medium division.
Hui Lanakila claimed the A division (1-13 crews entered), compiling 39 points and holding off Waimanalo (24 points) and Healani (22 points).
OHCRA heads to the windward side for its annual Waimanalo Regatta on Sunday. Na Ohana O Na Hui Wa‘a returns to Keehi Lagoon for its fifth event of the season, the ‘Alapa Hoe Regatta, also on Sunday.
