Kauai woman gets 10-year term for drugs
A Kauai circuit judge on Wednesday sentenced a 45-year-old Kilauea woman to 10 years in prison for drug-related offenses, according to a news release Thursday by Kauai County’s prosecutor.
Bridget Maile Lanning had pleaded no contest to promoting a dangerous drug in the second degree and a firearms charge. She also pleaded no contest to unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle in a separate incident.
In October 2013, police armed with a search warrant arrested Lanning at the Kilauea Menehune Mart. Officers recovered a loaded semi-automatic gun and 7.5 grams of methamphetamine, according to the release.
In July 2013, in a separate case, Lanning struck a woman while the victim was in her car.
Lanning has a criminal history that dates to 2002. Her record includes a misdemeanor and two petty misdemeanors for contempt of court and a petty misdemeanor for promoting a detrimental drug in the third degree.
Sunlight, satellite to brighten the night
A satellite will briefly but brightly light up a section of the evening sky over Honolulu on Friday.
The Iridium 52 satellite will reflect sunlight down to the city at 7:11 p.m. if the weather cooperates.
The flare will appear for several seconds in the northeast, just over halfway up the sky, to the right of and below the constellation Cassiopeia, which looks like a squashed letter M.
The satellite is 594 miles up, but has large shiny antennas that make it visible against the darkening sky when sunlight strikes at just the right angle. It will be very much brighter than the star below it, Capella.
Iridium Communications Inc. operates 66 satellites in low Earth orbit to provide voice and data coverage to satellite phones, pagers and transceivers worldwide.
