Klahn captures Lahaina tennis title

Two weeks after losing to Maria Sharapova’s boyfriend at the Australian Open, Bradley Klahn won the $50,000 Royal Lahaina Challenger on Maui.

Klahn swept Tsung-Hua Yang 6-2, 6-3, in Sunday’s final. Klahn came to Hawaii from Melbourne, where he lost to Grigor Dimitrov — who reached the quarterfinals in Australia — in the first round.

Klahn, 23, was the USTA Pro Circuit money leader last year, reaching five finals and capturing two titles. He earned a wild card into last year’s U.S. Open, where he reached the second round for the second straight year.

The 2010 NCAA champion from Stanford was seeded third on Maui with a world ranking of 93. He won $7,200 and 80 rankings points.

Yang, coming back from a knee injury, is ranked 274th. He took out fourth-seeded Jack Sock in the first round and second-seeded Tim Smyczek in the semifinals. The 22-year-old, who plays for Taiwan’s Davis Cup team, earned $4,240 and 48 rankings points.

Denis Kudla and Yasutaka Uchiyama captured the doubles championship 6-3, 6-2 over Americans Daniel Kosakowski and Nicolas Meister.
