Shop for New Year’s ‘lucky bags’
Royal Hawaiian Center is kicking off 2015 with a New Year’s Day Fukubukuro promotion, offering shoppers the opportunity to purchase "lucky bags" at half their retail value. The contents are a mystery until the purchase is made.
This year, 26 stores and restaurants are participating in the event, including Forever 21, L’Occitane, kate spade new york, Salvatore Ferragamo, P.F. Chang’s, and Il Lupino Trattoria & Wine Bar. Shoppers can expect to find restaurant gift cards and a mix of accessories, beauty products, handbags and clothing.
Depending on the store, bags range in cost from a few dollars into the hundreds.
The fukubukuro tradition began in Tokyo in the early 20th century but grew so popular that it has spread across Japan and to Hawaii. Japanese superstition has it that the good fortune in one’s fukubukuro bag reflects the luck they will have in the new year.
Marsala named Color of Year
Pantone, the global authority on color, announced "Marsala" as the Color of the Year for 2015.
According to the color experts, the elegant red-brown is a grounding statement color when used on its own or as a strong accent to many other colors.
It can serve as a rich hue for lips, cheeks and wardrobe, as well as the home.
Over at Sephora, the color already has materialized in collections, including the collaboration Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year Marsala Collection that includes a five-piece Marsala layering lip collection ($28), shimmering marsala cheek trio ($28), 24-color Facets of Marsala multifinish eye palette ($39) and more. — Nadine Kam
