Magnitude 4.2 quake felt across Los Angeles area

LOS ANGELES >> A small earthquake has rattled the west Los Angeles area but there are no reports of damages or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 4.2 quake struck at 7:36 p.m. PDT Sunday and was centered in the Santa Monica Mountains about 4 miles northwest of Westwood.

The USGS initially reported the quake registered at magnitude-3.8.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott said firefighters who inspected the city’s infrastructure and found no significant damage.

A USGS website for citizen reports of quake intensity showed the shallow quake was felt from Malibu northwest of Los Angeles down to the Manhattan Beach area.

USGS seismologist Lucy Jones told KNX-AM the quake is considered small, and has caused two aftershocks.
