HPU’s Farman wins defensive honor
Senior center Farbod Farman earned his second straight defensive player of the week honors after helping Hawaii Pacific pull off a stunner.
Farman led all PacWest players in rebound average with 13.7, including 10.3 on the defensive boards. He also averaged 14.0 points, shooting 64 percent from the field, by turning in three double-doubles and had 3.3 blocks per game.
In the Sea Warriors’ upset of No. 7 Dixie State, Farman had 17 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks. His other double-doubles came against Point Loma (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Chaminade (15 points, 14 rebounds).
‘Swords’ Kuany adds third weekly honor
Chaminade freshman guard Kuany Kuany was named freshman of the week for the third straight week after leading the Silverwords to three wins.
He averaged 19.3 points and 9. 3 rebounds, both among the top five performances in the conference. He also shot 60.9 percent from the floor.
Kuany scored 20 points with 10 rebounds against Dominican and 10 points and 12 rebounds against Academy of Art. The Australian national had a career-high 28 points against Hawaii Pacific, with a week-low six rebounds in the 83-82 victory.
Men’s honor roll
Scott Friel,BYU-Hawaii: The versatile sophomore guard averaged eight rebounds in three games, with his double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) lifting the Seasiders over Dominican in overtime. BYU-Hawaii, down to nine players, went 2-1 on the week.
Justin Long, HPU: The junior guard averaged 19.3 points and 3.0 assists in a 2-1 week for the Sea Warriors.
Women’s honor roll
Morganne Comstock, HPU: She averaged a double-double (15.0 points, 15.7 rebounds) as the Sea Warriors went 2-1. She set a program record with 21 rebounds, 12 on the defensive end, against Point Loma and had 16 against Chaminade.
Kirstie Williams,UHH: The junior guard scored a game-high 25 points, with a program-record seven 3-pointers, for the Vulcans in a win over Point Loma.

HPU’s Michnev earns wild-card qualifier
Hawaii Pacific senior Petr Michnev defeated Sea Warriors teammate Thibaud Berland in Sunday’s final of the USTA Royal Lahaina Challenger Wild-Card Tournament to advance to the main draw of the week-long event, which opens Saturday on Maui.
The top-seeded Michnev didn’t drop a set in five matches, including a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory over the unseeded Berland, a sophomore. Michnev defeated former Sea Warriors coach Henry Somerville, HPU teammate Yann Renault, former HPU player and current Hawaii Hilo coach Karl Sloss, and Sea Warriors sophomore Jaume Martinez-Vich to gain the final.
Berland’s road to the final included a straight-sets victory over Eddie Merc and three-set wins over Hawaii’s Danilo Casanova, the eighth seed, and former Brigham Young-Hawaii No. 1 singles player Rong Ma. The sophomore then bested HPU junior Mattis Wetzel, seeded sixth, 7-6, 6-1 in Sunday’s earlier semifinal.
