NOTEBOOK
Eagles have landed
St. Francis earned every bit of its accolades after winning the Division II boys basketball state title last year.
Damien stepped up this season and is primed for a state-tourney berth with 6-foot-7 Kapi‘ina King scoring big.
But Hawaii Baptist? The running Eagles have already knocked off both ILH D-II powers. Coach George Weeks’ team, with guard B.J. Hosaka scoring 15 points, upset St. Francis 49-48 at the Saints’ new gym last Tuesday, then toppled Damien 51-48 on Friday.
With a crowd of 1,000 packing Dan Liu Gym, Hosaka pumped in 24 points in the win over Damien, with 6-foot Jordan Kauwe and 6-3 John Killough providing muscle on the boards.
"It was the biggest, loudest crowd we’ve had for any sport," HBA athletic director Deren Oshiro said.
Answering the call
It might be coach Bobbie Awa’s biggest challenge in the two decades she has been coach of the Konawaena girls basketball program.
There is not much depth, not much height and a lot of inexperience. But Awa does have talent in Alaska transfer Jasmine Perea, returnee Ihi Victor, rebounder Selena Molina and, of course, premier scorer Chanelle Molina.
The sophomore played a key supporting role last season for the Wildcats as they reached the state final before losing to Kamehameha. Now, Molina is in workhorse mode, accepting the responsibility of additional scoring. The speedy, springy guard scored 28 points in a 66-41 win over Kamehameha-Hawaii on Saturday. That came not long after a 45-point effort in a win over Ka‘u. Konawaena is 6-0 in BIIF play.
HMA hotter than hot
For decades, Hawaiian Mission was the school that had its own gym but didn’t play varsity basketball.
Now, HMA’s girls team is playing hoops as well as any tiny school in the state. Hawaiian Mission avenged an early-season loss in a 45-38 win over Island Pacific on Wednesday to improve to 4-1 in league play with three games remaining on the slate.
After the league seasons, there’s nothing else for the state’s smallest programs. Adding a state tournament for Division III, which was suggested heartily by former Kamehameha-Hawaii athletic director Bob Wagner several years ago, may come some day.
The HHSAA’s guidelines for creating a state tournament for any sport include a minimum of three participating teams per league, and a minimum of three leagues playing for respective titles
