While the Kailua Canoe Club fell just five points shy of completing its "Drive for Five" straight Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association titles last year, the club appears to be on track to starting a new streak as the "Redeem Team."
Kailua led the way in the AAA division (27-39 crews entered) with 187 points on a regatta-best 12 race wins en route to taking top honors at the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association’s season-opening 24th annual Clement D. Paiaina Regatta Sunday at Keehi Lagoon. Defending OHCRA champion and state runner-up Hui Nalu amassed 160 points spurred by 10 race wins and held off Outrigger (151 points) and Lanikai (134).
"Our goal was to place in every race — to finish in the top three — and we were able to win a few down the stretch," said Kailua co-head coach Hank Leandro. "We have to redeem ourselves (after falling to Hui Nalu last year). We let that go, really, but it will still serve as a reminder."
Kailua scored consistently to take a 98-93 lead over Outrigger — which began the day on a torrid run as its keiki won seven of the first 17 events — through 24 races as Hui Nalu (89 points) and Lanikai (79) remained within striking distance. With eight races to go, Kailua had extended its advantage to double digits, compiling 145 points as Hui Nalu (134) and Outrigger (128) attempted to mount a comeback.
In one of the day’s marquee events, Hui Nalu ran away with the senior women’s race as the crew of Tayte Brock, Madison Minkel, Nohealani Hirahara, Kerri Cummins, Mary Ann Kawakami and Denise Darval-Chang traversed the 1.5-mile course in 13 minutes, 6.82 seconds. Kailua kept pace with the leaders for most of the race, but faded late to finish second (13:47.83) ahead of Lanikai (13:54.77) and Hui Lanakila (13:56.70).
"It’s a great start; we had a lot of experience to rely on" said Darval-Chang, who also serves as Hui Nalu’s coach. "There are about 60 women fighting for seats (in the canoe), so every week will be different. We have a lot of great members and excellent coaches. It’s going to be a good year."

Keahiakahoe won two races to score 55 points and dominate the AA division (14-26 crews entered) ahead of Waikiki Surf Club (28) and Leeward Kai (21). Hui Lanakila notched three victories and racked up 37 points to claim the A division (1-13 crews entered) ahead of Healani (24) and New Hope (22).
The regatta was dedicated to the memory of Mitch Kai, a novice paddler with Healani who passed away in January after falling while hiking. Kai served the community as a firefighter, lifeguard and part-time emergency medical technician, and according to fellow club mates, he was an avid outdoorsman who took up paddling last summer.
As part of the race’s opening ceremony, Kai’s parents were on hand as his crew paddled out with an open seat in the canoe and scattered flowers while firefighters honored their comrade with a water salute from a fire hose on the beach.
Healani, the regatta’s host club, said in the event’s program: "Though Mitch was with Healani for a short time, he has definitely left some lasting memories. We will miss Mitch, his smile and the passion he had for the outdoors and will always keep his energy and drive to live life to the fullest in our hearts."
OHCRA travels to Kailua Beach for its annual King Kamehameha Regatta on Sunday.
Na Ohana O Na Hui Wa’a will hold its third regatta of the season Sunday at Keehi Lagoon.
