Te’o takes home seventh major award

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. >> Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o has won the Lott IMPACT Trophy as the collegiate defensive player having the biggest impact on his team.

The linebacker from Laie, who prepped at Punahou, led the Irish in tackles each of the past three seasons.

It was the seventh national award for Te’o in a week. He was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night in New York.

The award is named for Hall of Fame defensive back Ronnie Lott and goes to a player with strong academic work, community involvement and team leadership.

Oregon State suspends three, one from Maui

Three Oregon State players arrested following a fight at a Corvallis bar over the weekend have been suspended from the team.

Senior defensive end Rudolf Fifita, junior defensive tackle Mana Rosa and junior linebacker Dyllon Kalena Mafi were arraigned on Monday.

Rosa attended Maui’s Baldwin High School.

All face two counts of fourth-degree assault and one count of second-degree disorderly conduct.
The No. 15 Beavers (9-3) play Texas in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. It is unlikely any of the three will play in the bowl game.
