Pearl City couldn’t carry over the magic from its improbable run to the OIA title two weeks ago.

Cassandra Stetser, Gabrielle Fukumoto and Tia Furuta each scored goals for Mililani, which shut out the OIA champion Chargers 3-0 on Thursday night in the Division I quarterfinals of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Trojans (13-3) ended the Chargers’ five-match winning streak to advance to tonight’s second semifinal against Kamehameha (12-1-1).

Pearl City (10-4), which won the OIA tournament after entering as the fifth seed out of the West, became the first No. 2 seed to fail to reach the semifinals since the state tournament was broken up into two divisions in 2007.

"Our game plan was to score early so that Pearl City would kind of let down," said Furuta, who scored her second goal of the tournament. "If we went out strong the first 10 or 15 minutes we thought the game would basically be ours."

Mililani, which beat the Chargers 5-0 during the regular season, did exactly that, putting relentless pressure on Pearl City goalkeeper Ariela Bali.

The Chargers senior kept her team in the game, saving eight of Mililani’s nine shots on goal in the first half.

"She made some incredible stops," Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. "We looked at some of our shots that were just inches away, but (Bali) kept her team in the game. You’ve got to give her a lot of extra credit for what she did because she carried a lot of the defense for them as a goalkeeper."

Stetser scored the only goal of the half off a free kick by Mililani after she drew a foul on the Chargers.

Bali made the save off the free kick, but Stetser beat the Chargers’ defense to the spot and was able to put in the rebound as the ball bounced away from Bali.

Outside of a couple of breakaways by sophomore Cailla Fabro, the Chargers failed to test Mililani goalkeeper Tasalina Leoso much in the first half. Pearl City attempted five shots to Mililani’s 14 but only trailed by one at the break.

"We were actually really nervous because it was only 1-0 at the end of the half and Pearl City could have caught up," Furuta said. "We pushed through at the end."

Mililani took a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute as Fukumoto drilled in a shot from the top of the box on a rebound after Bali made another brilliant save.

Mililani junior Kayla Braunthal juked a Pearl City defender and unleashed a hard shot that Bali made a diving save of, but the ball deflected right to Fukumoto, who powered it over Bali’s head before she could get completely back up to her feet.

Furuta then put the game away as she got lost by Chargers defenders in the box. Senior Nicole Nishiki fired a long pass to Furuta, who simply turned and drilled one past Bali to seal the game.

Since losing to Kaiser in the quarterfinals of the OIA tournament, the Trojans have won four in a row, outscoring their opponents 12-1.

"We have been very motivated to prove that we are a good team," said Stetser, who led the Trojans in goals scored in the regular season. "We’ve grown together and we’re more of a possessive team and we showed today that we can bring it."

The Warriors of Kapalama scored two goals in the first 17 minutes of the game en route to a shutout of the third-seeded Warriors of Maui.

Kelli Fryxell scored in the seventh minute and the Hurricanes polished off the ILH champs to complete a quarterfinal round in which all four unseeded teams won.

Bri Vallente scored two goals, the first in the first two minutes of the match, as Ka Makani rolled past the Mules.

Hawaii Prep, state runner-up the past two seasons, led 4-0 at the half. Vallente’s other goal came in the 54th minute.
