Flood advisories for Oahu and Kauai were canceled late Tuesday afternoon, but not before a group of paddlers off Kauai were caught in severe weather conditions.

Inclement weather also caused power outages on Oahu in Aina Haina, Kalihi, Kailua and Kahuku. .

Rescue personnel were dispatched to Lawai and Poipu beaches Tuesday morning at about 10:30 a.m. after a group of one-man paddlers got caught in a squall, Kauai County officials said. They arrived to find a 64-year-old female paddler from Kalaheo had become separated from her one-man canoe, but had made it safely to shore. Her canoe was later recovered near Hoone Beach, also known as Baby Beach.

The woman reported that she was with a group of six paddlers who had set out from Kukuiula Small Boat Harbor, when they were hit with a sudden shift in weather and wind gusts of up to 50 mph. Two other paddlers also made it safely to shore with help from bystanders, and lifeguards escorted the other three paddlers to shore.

None of the paddlers required medical treatment.

The National Weather Service at about 10:25 had reported a band of heavy showers and strong wind gusts that were expected to hit Kauai.

Kauai and Oahu were the first islands to feel the brunt of a cold front moving across the state, bringing strong winds, heavy downpours and possible thunderstorms.

A flood advisory for Oahu expired at 4 p.m. and a flood advisory for Kauai has been canceled.

“At 1 p.m., radar showed heavy downpours extending from near Ewa Beach to 20 miles southwest of Pearl Harbor,” according to the Oahu flood advisory. “These downpours were moving toward the northeast at 20 mph and will overspread town-side Oahu during the early to mid-afternoon. Another band of heavy showers just west of Oahu from Kahuku to Kaena Point will move ashore during the early afternoon.”

The weather system is expected to reach Maui County in the evening and Hawaii island at night.

The weather service issued several advisories in advance of the storm, including a high wind warning for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa summits until 6 a.m. Wednesday, with gusts up to 90 mph possible; a winter weather advisory for Big Island summits above 11,500 feet through 8 a.m. Thursday; a high wind advisory for Haleakala’s summit until 6 a.m. Wednesday; a gale warning for Kauai Leeward waters until Tuesday evening and a small craft advisory for all Hawaii waters until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Following the front will be a push of cool, dry, northerly winds that may approach advisory level for some places on Kauai, forecasters said.

With few showers and strong winds, smoke should not be too much of a problem for New Year’s Eve, they said.
