Maui rescuers airlift hiker whose leg became pinned under tree
Maui firefighters and rescue personnel rescued a 44-year-old hiker whose leg became pinned under a large tree trunk that had come loose in the Makawao Forest Reserve about noon Thursday.
The Makawao man was hiking with a female friend in a stream bed three quarters of a mile north of the Piiholo Water Treatment facility. Firefighters said the man sustained an injury to his lower right leg when a large tree trunk had became loose and pinned his leg to the side of dirt/rock embankment.
Firefighters arrived and used a chainsaw and pry bar to free the man’s leg.
Maui Fire Department’s helicopter was airlifted the patient to a landing zone. The patient was then transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
