Lanakila Meals on Wheels, Hawaii’s largest senior meal provider, is asking the community to help brighten the holiday for Oahu’s senior population.
"With the ‘Sponsor Our Seniors’ program, for the cost of a dinner and movie out, $42.50, you can help provide nutritious meals and personal contact for five homebound seniors in need," coordinator Marlena Willette said in a news release. "With over 340 seniors on the wait list due to limited funding, donations in any amount make all the difference, not just during the holidays, but throughout the year."
The public can also help the "Santa for Seniors" program by donating before Dec. 14 small gift items, like reusable tote bags, crossword or Sudoku books, grooming kits, house slippers, or $5 gift cards. Volunteers will wrap and deliver them on Christmas Day to seniors who might not otherwise receive a gift that day, the release said. Keiki can take part by making greeting cards.
For the first time, Lanakila Kitchen is also offering Christmas Meals To Go, including prime rib with all the fixings. Customers who preorder can pick up their meal hot and ready to serve on Christmas Day. All proceeds directly support Meals on Wheels.
