Water main break closes intersection
Halawa Heights Road and Iwaiwa Street reopened Monday evening after a water main break damaged the roadway.
The Board of Water Supply said the road reopened at 8:30 p.m.
According to the board, the main broke at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, leaving 17 residences without water. Water was restored to all customers by 9 a.m. Monday.
Drivers were urged to avoid the intersection as a contractor worked to repair damage caused by the 8-inch main break. Both lanes fronting 99-646 Halawa Heights Road were closed.
Makai-bound traffic was being detoured onto Iwaiwa Street, while mauka-bound traffic was being detoured onto Hulumanu Street.
Work to resurface the street, which developed a sinkhole, continued into Monday evening.
Work will shut water service in Hanapepe
Hanapepe, Kauai, will have little or no water service from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday as the county Water Department replaces a hydrant and installs a branch valve.
The shutdown will affect customers along Hanapepe Road between Hana and Kona roads.
Customers are advised to store enough water to meet their needs during the outage and pass the word on to neighbors.
After the water is back on, the department said, air could be mixed in, making the water white or milky. But the air will eventually dissipate, the department said.
Also Tuesday, a department contractor, Cushnie Construction Co.. will be removing the temporary waterline along the westbound shoulder of Kaumualii Highway in Kalaheo. The work is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Motorists are advised to drive carefully and allow extra driving time.
