One of two men who escaped from Hawaii Community Correctional Center in Hilo was captured in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision in Kau on Friday evening.
Jarvis Naoki Higa, 35, was arrested at 8:15 p.m., Hawaii County police and Department of Public Safety said.
A team of about 15 officers converged on a home in the vicinity of Pacific Parkway, said police Capt. Robert Wagner, head of Hilo patrol. Several people fled from the house on foot, including Higa, he said. He was captured a short distance away by the team of officers made up of police from the Hilo, Kona and Kau districts, as well as state deputy sheriffs.
Wagner said they began looking for Higa in Ocean View earlier Friday after receiving a tip. Higa was taken to the Hilo police station.
Ryan James Jeffries-Hamar, 31, remains at large. On Wednesday, the two inmates overpowered and assaulted a corrections officer in the jail’s library, took the librarian’s car keys. They then forced their way out, got into the librarian’s car and drove off.
