For accomplishing something never done before as a team, Hawaii got the nod for a piece of individual hoops hardware on Monday.
Senior forward Christian Standhardinger was named Big West Player of the Week for the second time this season after helping the Rainbow Warriors to a pair of road victories on Thursday and Saturday.
Standhardinger averaged 18.5 points and 11 rebounds in those contests as third-place UH (18-7, 7-4 Big West) extended its streak of road victories to four, a new program record in conference games.
"One of our goals was to make history," the native of Munich, Germany, said. "And I think we kind of a little bit made history with the four road-game wins in a row. So we’re all very happy."
UH will be ecstatic if it can keep its recent roll going at home, where it is only 3-2 in league play. UH hosts leader UC Irvine (17-9, 8-2) on Thursday in a key matchup, then UC Davis (8-17, 3-7) on Saturday.
Standhardinger had 27 points and 13 rebounds, his eighth double-double of the season, in UH’s 87-76 win at UC Riverside last Thursday. He was quieter in an 83-80 thriller at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, attempting only six shots, but he still managed to collect 10 points and nine rebounds.
He’s been particularly strong on the glass of late, averaging 11.3 rebounds per game over the last three.
"I think it takes a lot of pressure off you offensively when you concentrate on something that’s an effort area," assistant coach Scott Fisher said. "And when you feel yourself getting those … I do think it takes a little bit of pressure off trying to stat up offensively or some other way. He’s been concentrating on that and it’s been paying off."
The 6-foot-8 mobile big man is still getting to the line like few others. He attempted 14 free throws on the trip, making 12. On the season, that raised him to 201 attempts with 153 makes — third in both single-season categories in the UH record books. He needs 24 more attempts to break John Penebacker’s record in the 1969-70 season and 32 more makes to surpass Chris Gaines’ high mark from 1989-90.
Standhardinger needs 57 points to become the program’s 16th 1,000-point scorer. The Nebraska transfer is poised to become only the fourth among them to do so in a two-year UH career, along with Tom Henderson (1,082), Anthony Carter (1,070) and Reggie Cross (1,013).
A total of four Big West weekly awards have gone out to UH players this season -— wing Brandon Spearman and point guard Keith Shamburger received one apiece.
Standhardinger now has four such awards over his two seasons at UH.
"A lot of my teammates could have made (this week’s award)," he said. "(Isaac) Fotu had an amazing two games. Keith and Brandon and Quincy (Smith) all had amazing games. I think I just got lucky at the end."
