The Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry is hosting a donor drive Saturday with the hope of helping a 7-year-old biracial California boy in need of a bone marrow transplant.
Organizers are appealing to Hawaii residents because of the state’s high mixed-race population.
Baylor Nihei Fredrickson of Albany is Japanese and German, and his ideal donor also would be of Asian-Caucasian descent.
While the national bone marrow registry has more than 10 million donors on its list, only about 4 percent have a mixed-race background. Donors and recipients of similar ancestry are more likely to be a match.
Baylor was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2012 and went into remission after chemotherapy treatment, but the cancer has returned and he now needs a bone marrow transplant.
Saturday’s drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ward Gateway Center Starbucks near Sports Authority and Wahoo’s Fish Taco.
Baylor’s bone marrow campaign can be followed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/amatchforbay. His story and a promotional video featuring a plea for donors from Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi can be viewed on the Asian American Donor Program’s website at www.aadp.org.
