Two prominent surfing figures, Sunny Garcia and Randy Rarick, join Honolulu Marathon President Jim Barahal in the 2015 class of the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame.
They will be enshrined during ceremonies May 5 at the Honolulu Country Club.
Garcia was the 2000 world champion and won the Triple Crown of Surfing six times between 1992 and 2004.
He was ranked in the top 10 for 11 consecutive years and was still winning contests at age 42 in 2012. He was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in 2010.
Rarick is being inducted as a pioneer in the sport — he has been involved as a contestant, board designer, organizer and promoter for more than 40 years. Chief among them are organizing the Triple Crown of Surfing, which he has had a hand in running for 30 years.
Earlier this year Rarick was inducted into the the Surfing Walk of Fame in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Barahal will be inducted as a pioneer organizer. He has presided over the Honolulu Marathon, the fourth largest marathon in the U.S., since 1987.
During his tenure the number of entrants has tripled to more than 30,000. The event is said to produce more than $100 million a year in visitor spending.
More than 100 athletes, pioneers and contributors have been inducted into the Hall since 1998.
The Hall was established in 1997 under a bill passed by the Legislature as a self-sustaining non-profit organization and designated it the "state museum for sports history in the islands."
