Matteo’s successor sets opening date
The three-concept Blue Marlin restaurant will open June 27 in the space formerly occupied by the storied Matteo’s Italian Restaurant.
The newly renovated space will include three restaurants and three menus: Blue Marlin Restaurant, Blue Marlin Tapas & Sushi Bar, and HI Tide Poke Cafe.
Blue Marlin’s signature dishes will include banana leaf laulau and paella, while the tapas and sushi bar will offer, as the name implies, small plates and sushi. It will offer a large wine list and a selection of $5 dishes all day. HI Tide’s signature will be the made-to-order chazuke poke bowl, served in a casual atmosphere.
The new interior was designed around a surf-shack concept but also offers private dining space for 30 customers.
Local designer Allison Izu designed the restaurant’s uniforms, while Ed Fernandez worked on HI Tide T-shirts.
Blue Marlin is at 364 Seaside Ave., on the corner of Kuhio Avenue, and will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, while its tapas and sushi bar will operate from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily, and HI Tide will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Honolulu-based Anthology Digital earned eight awards this month from two national organizations that annually recognize industry-leading design excellence in marketing and communication.
Anthology Digital earned four honors each from the Communicator Awards and Hermes Creative Awards for work performed on behalf of Bank of Hawaii, Hawaiian Telcom and Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, as well as TRP Parts, a subsidiary of PACCAR, a Fortune Top 200 company based in Washington state that manufactures Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks.
U.K. to count prostitution, drugs for GDP
LONDON » Britain is putting a price on vice.
Prostitution and the import, manufacture and consumption of illegal drugs like crack cocaine and heroin will be included in the official estimates of the country’s economy, the national statistics agency said Friday.
Some of these activities, like prostitution, are legal in certain European Union countries, and comparable figures are needed.
All member states need the same standard because they are used to assess a member state’s contribution to the EU budget.
The new estimates also simply seek to get a more realistic picture of the economy — warts and all. At the moment, the only illegal activities included in Britain’s GDP are estimates on alcohol and tobacco smuggling.
Dow, S&P close out May at record highs
NEW YORK » The stock market closed out May on a mostly higher note Friday, sending two out of the three major U.S. indexes to record highs.
Trading was uneven, and indexes moved between small gains and losses for most of the day. A late push higher left the Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor’s 500 at all-time highs, but just barely.
May was the best month for investors since February. The S&P rose 2.1 percent for the month, while the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.8 percent and the Nasdaq rose 3.1 percent.
