I often hear people complain that there are few dress-up occasions in Hono­lulu. I say, why wait for an occasion when every day presents an opportunity to dress up?

I’m probably in the 1 percent of people who really, really like clothes, but the holiday period presents the ideal moment for looking your best.

The poor economy has put the kibosh on the black- and white-tie soirees of years past, but there are always restaurants, theater halls and a "Nutcracker" ballet or two where you can sparkle and shine in holiday finery without worrying about being over the top.

I admit I was disappointed when I went to see the musical "Wicked" during its first week at Blaisdell Concert Hall and saw a slew of dull browns and weekend "let’s go shopping at Longs" attire.

Come on. A musical boasting bubbles, glitter, magic and winged monkeys demands that the audience rise to the exuberant spirit of the occasion.

For men, how about swapping that workaday aloha shirt for a nice dress shirt, dress shoes and some bling in the form of cuff links?

For women it’s now or never for that cute cocktail dress hanging in the back of the closet, and temperatures have been cooling just enough in the evening to make elegant wraps practical.

Accent your look with cocktail rings, dangling earrings or a dramatic necklace, and a clutch and shoes that express sexy sophistication.
