There’ll be no rooftop hockey in Las Vegas after all. A plan to build an ice rink and arena on the roof of the Plaza casino downtown has been scrapped, apparently due to cost considerations.
The original plan was altered to place the arena in the casino parking lot, but that idea was also ultimate-ly rejected. The halting of the plan leaves the Las Vegas Wranglers minor league hockey team without a home after ending its 11-year relationship with the Orleans.
SLS buffet: SLS Las Vegas, due to open Labor Day weekend, has announced that its dining offerings will include a classic Las Vegas-style buffet of the gourmet variety. Food stations will include artisanal Mediterranean, wood-grilled, Chinese and Japanese cuisine, and fresh desserts, plus a cocktail program. The buffet’s name and price have not been announced.
Pantry coming: The Mirage has announced that it’s opening a new restaurant called the Pantry. Described as a "family kitchen," the 24-hour restaurant is scheduled to debut in September.
Empress Court closing: Empress Court, the long-running Chinese restaurant at Caesars Palace, is set to close later this spring. The second-floor space it occupies will undergo a re-branding as the seventh restaurant in the MR CHOW chain.
Question: A big building was being bulldozed the last time I was downtown. Is something noteworthy happening there?
Answer: You witnessed the razing of the old downtown courthouse building. It was purchased by the D casino, which has announced that the 2.76-acre parcel will be turned into festival grounds hosting music, concerts, food events, and other outdoor festivities.
