The upsets that created carnage in the OIA girls soccer tournament carried on into states.

Freshman Jordan Hill deposited a header past Kaiser senior keeper Corina Edgington in the seventh minute of overtime and Aiea shocked the Cougars 1-0 in the Division I first round of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts/HHSAA Girls Soccer State Championships on Wednesday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Hill said she had never converted a header, not even when Na Alii prepared for the Cougars with a little extra practice the day before. It was Hill’s fifth goal of the season.

“For the first time ever, she followed directions,” Aiea coach Benji Villaflor said. “Usually you have to tell her the opposite to get her to do what you want to do, but it was a great effort.”

Hill’s score came off a pinpoint pass off a corner kick from junior Keani Napu‘unoa. Aiea had a corner kick just before that, but whiffed when Taylor Kolona’s service bounced untouched through the box. Aiea midfielder Raisa Strom-Okimoto wouldn’t let the usually stout Kaiser defense clear it, though, and earned another corner kick after dribbling through a double-team. Strom-Okimoto had multiple chances during the second half, but Napu‘unoa made sure her final effort was not wasted.

“It was perfect,” Hill said of the pass. “I never headed a ball in ever before. It is usually all over the place. But that pass was just right there.”

Aiea, the sixth seed out of the OIA, moves on to play BIIF champion Konawaena (10-1-2) today at 3 p.m. at the main stadium.

Na Alii (11-4) were the last team in from the OIA and played like they had nothing to lose against the OIA East champion and league runner-up. Aiea started the season 8-1 but was just 2-3 after that. Rather than lay back and try to hold off Kaiser’s powerful offense for 100 minutes and force the lottery that is penalty kicks, Aiea played Kaiser straight up and the result was an end-to-end game that wore out the Cougars.

Kaiser (11-3) had four nice chances to Aiea’s two in overtime before the final sequence. The Cougars finish the season with consecutive losses after losing to underdog Pearl City in the OIA title match. The Cougars are bumped into the consolation bracket to play Maui today at 1 p.m.

“Give all of the credit to that team,” Kaiser coach Adolph Samuels said. “They played really hard today and beat us to the ball and kind of took us apart with getting to the ball. I give the credit for coming through at the end, that was a beautiful goal. That’s how you win the big games, just like that.”

Kapolei 3, Maui 1

Bianca Gonzales scored two minutes into the game, and again in the 56th minute, as the Hurricanes defeated the Sabers.

Mililani 4, Hilo 0

Four Mililani players scored as the Trojans blanked the Vikings. Sophomore Tia Furuta scored seven minutes into the game and senior Dallas Minaya capped it off with a goal in the 76th minute.

Kamehameha 9, Castle 2

Junior Emma Young earned a hat trick to lead the Warriors over the Knights. Kawaiulani Makue added two goals for Kamehameha. Vanessa Chinen scored Castle’s only two goals in the first half.

Eryka Keoho recorded two goals in two minutes as the Warriors blanked the Dragons.
