Puppy mill manager pleads no contest to 153 counts of animal cruelty
The former manager of a Waimanalo puppy mill pleaded no contest in state court this morning to 153 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty — one count for each dog the Hawaiian Humane Society rescued from squalid living conditions two years ago.
David Lee Becker faces a maximum one-year jail term and $2,000 fine for each of the 153 counts when he is sentenced later this month.
The Hawaiian Humane Society will ask for $370,701 in restitution for rescuing the animals and caring for them before the organization was able to adopt out the dogs.
