ILH baseball title game on Wednesday
The ILH baseball championship game between Saint Louis and Mid-Pacific will be played on Wednesday.
Initially, the game was scheduled for Saturday, then moved to Monday. But the league pushed the game to Wednesday at ‘Iolani’s field with a 3:45 p.m. start time.
Saint Louis won the regular season to clinch a state-tournament berth. Mid-Pacific went unbeaten in the double-elimination ILH tournament to secure the other state berth. Wednesday’s winner will win the league title and clinch an opening-round bye in the state tournament.
Volleyball regionals and more
HHSAA executive director Chris Chun seemed pleased with the first two rounds of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships.
The regional format is in pilot-program mode for the sport, which meant that King Kekaulike and Kamehameha-Hawaii got to host state-tourney matches for the first time on Saturday. KS-Hawaii ousted Kamehameha 24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 27-25. King Kekaulike topped Waianae 25-15, 25-12, 23-25, 25-19.
"We don’t have the numbers back yet, but we’re not expecting attendance to be as big as it was for girls basketball," Chun said.
All four seeded teams in the D-I tourney, including top-seeded Punahou and second-seeded Moanalua, advanced to Friday’s semifinal round.
In a bit of a twist on the Division II side, three-time defending state champion Hawaii Baptist is unseeded by request from the ILH. The league permitted its schools with D-I and D-II teams to compete for league titles in boys volleyball for the first time in recent history. Normally, bigger D-II teams like ‘Iolani, Kamehameha, Punahou and Saint Louis compete for a separate I-AA championship. That changed this season and Punahou II (12-0) was declared the league’s D-II champion, but is ineligible to compete in the D-II state tournament.
The league then requested that both of its state-tournament entries, HBA and Hanalani, be unseeded. So HBA, one of the top teams in the state regardless of classification, will meet fourth-seeded Kailua when the state tourney begins on Thursday. Kapaa is the top seed, with Seabury Hall at No. 2 and Ka‘u at No. 3.
