Seasiders seek 11th national title
Brigham Young-Hawaii begins its quest for an 11th women’s volleyball national title Thursday when it faces West Texas A&M in the NCAA Division II elite eight in Pensacola, Fla.
The fifth-ranked Seasiders (24-3), the top seed out of the West Region, have won their past 23 matches. The ninth-ranked Lady Buffs (33-4) won the South Central Region as the second seed.
The last time BYUH advanced to the elite eight was in 2002 on the West Texas A&M campus in Canyon, Texas. The Seasiders defeated New Haven, Tampa and Truman State to claim their 10th title.
Should BYUH win Thursday, it will face the winner of Thursday’s quarterfinal between top-ranked Concordia-St. Paul (30-4), the five-time defending champion, and Wingate (32-2) on Friday. The national championship is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Seasiders have played just one of the teams in the elite eight. On Aug. 31, BYUH fell to host Concordia-St. Paul 27-25, 26-24, 25-21.
