Darryl D. Perry: He says he will retire as
police chief if he wins the election

Police Chief Darryl D. Perry filed papers Friday to run as a candidate for the Kauai County Council in the 2014 election.
Perry said he is nearing the end of his law enforcement career and wants to contribute to the community in a different role. "I wanted to see if I could help the community, Kauai and Niihau, by giving the citizens an option, an alternative on who can best represent them at the Council," he said Friday.
Government transparency, agricultural growth and housing are some issues Perry wants to tackle. As a veteran in law enforcement, he said he can bring his experience to the Council and give a different perspective on issues.
If elected, Perry said he will retire as police chief.
Perry, 63, has served as police chief since 2007. Born and raised on Kauai, he started his career in law enforcement at the Honolulu Police Department in 1972. He transferred to the Kauai Police Department for a few years and later returned to Honolulu, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in justice administration from Hawaii Pacific University and a master’s degree in organizational management from the University of Phoenix Hawaii Campus.
He retired from HPD as a major in 2002 and served as chief of security at First Hawaiian Bank and an investigator with the attorney general’s office before he was sworn in as Kauai police chief.
