Waikiki Health Center’s Friendly Neighbors program will hold a recruitment and training session Wednesday for people interested in volunteering to help senior citizens. The event will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Paki Hale, at 3840 Paki Ave.
As the older population in Waikiki grows, more volunteers are needed to provide companionship for at least an hour a week and to help seniors with simple tasks.
Volunteers without criminal records and who can commit to giving one to two hours a week for at least three months are wanted.
Volunteers typically engage seniors in conversation, provide entertainment and recreation, read or write letters, work on puzzles and play cards, shop for groceries, provide encouragement, assist in getting to medical appointments, do laundry and other light household chores, prepare meals and send greetings.
Call 926-8032 to reserve a spot in this training or another.
More information and volunteer forms are available on Waikiki Health Center’s website at www.waikikihc.org/friendlyneighbors.
