Firefighters contained a brushfire above Royal Summit on Sunday morning and continued to put out hot spots throughout the day, a spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department said.

The department was notified of the fire Saturday night, but crews weren’t able to find it in the dark, Capt. Gary Lum said.

Crews spotted a smoke plume at first light Sunday and traced the plume back to its source.

Lum said he was unsure of the size of the blaze because it is in a difficult area to access, but it was not very large. The fire was on an access road that Hawaiian Electric uses to access utility poles.

The first engine was dispatched just before 7:30 a.m., Lum said. Six engines, one ladder, three tankers and the department’s helicopter battled the flames.

Later, firefighters battled a small brush fire behind the University of Hawaii at Manoa faculty housing.

Police closed St. Louis Heights Drive between Robert Place and Bertram Street at 1:50 p.m. and reopened it about a half hour later. Lum said crews had to hike to the blaze.
