Ocean Safety officials rescued several people from waters around Oahu’s North Shore on Saturday, a Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman said.
First, rescuers on a personal watercraft assisted two surfers to shore around 2:35 p.m. from off Mokuleia. They did not require further treatment.
Then around 3:15 p.m., a woman in her 20s was washed off the rocks at Shark’s Cove. She was able to get out of the water without lifeguards’ aid but suffered scratches and cuts and was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.
Around 3:40 p.m., two women ran into trouble swimming outside Three Tables on the Haleiwa side of Shark’s Cove. Swimmers who were already in the water tried to help them, but another wound up needing assistance.
Lifeguards and Honolulu firefighters helped the three swimmers to shore and paramedics responded, but the patients refused transport.
Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the public should recognize that winter is dangerous along the North Shore because waves can wash people off rocks and ledges without warning.
