Rosie Sutherland’s rendering of Madame Pele with flames and tapa-inspired elements has won the design contest announced in November by MobiPCS and phone-case customizer 808 Shells.

Sutherland’s artwork will be laser-engraved onto limited-edition Samsung Galaxy S3 cases by Maui-based 808 Shells that will be sold exclusively at MobiPCS stores statewide beginning in mid-February.

Artists were invited to submit black and white designs, which were to be voted on by Facebook users.

Sutherland will receive the first case produced, a free Samsung phone with 12 months of free service from MobiPCS, and a Beats by Dre “Studio” headset valued at more than $1,500.

Rusty Kamai of Honolulu and Samson Harp of Maui won second and third place, respectively.
