Tenth-ranked Kaiser remained at the top of the OIA East girls basketball standings with a 53-39 win over visiting Moanalua on Thursday night.
Junior Rose Shimaoka finished with a game-high 26 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three assists to help the Cougars (6-0) stay undefeated in league play.
Brandi Baker added 10 points and Brooke Ho chipped in eight points and five rebounds as Kaiser led from start to finish against Na Menehune (3-3).
"Moanalua is always good and always has good guards and I told my girls that it was going to come down to our guards against their guards," Cougars coach Simon Bitanga said. "I think our guards stepped it up tonight."
Shimaoka led the way with 19 of her 26 in the first half as Kaiser led 34-21 at the break.
Moanalua junior Sienna Ho scored a team-high 12 points but was forced to the bench due to foul trouble midway through the second quarter.
Kaiser ramped up its pressure full court and Shimaoka scored eight of her points during an 11-4 run to end the half to push the lead to double digits.
"Once we seen her go out we took away the other ball handlers and trapped and we got a lot of tipped balls," Bitanga said.
Na Menehune missed their first nine shots but stayed in the game behind freshman Kelcie Leong, who hit a 3-pointer late in the first quarter and had seven of her nine points off the bench in the first half.
Baker hit a pull-up jumper and converted a three-point play as Kaiser scored seven straight to start the second half to take its biggest lead of the game at 41-21.
Delylah Sanerivi scored seven of her eight points in the fourth quarter to go along with 12 rebounds for Moanalua, which has dropped two of its last three.
Kaiser is one of two undefeated teams in the East and travels to Kailua to play the 5-1 Surfriders on Saturday.
One of Bitanga’s major concerns heading into this weekend’s showdown is cleaning up an offense that committed 24 turnovers against Moanalua.
"We didn’t expect to make that many turnovers," he said. "We have another good game coming up this Saturday and we’ve got to try to keep up with how we’ve been playing and do what we’ve got to do."
Moanalua has another road game at McKinley (1-5).
