Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Andrew Correa insisted it’s difficult getting to this point.

It hasn’t seemed that way for the Warriors, who won their second straight game by mercy rule to advance to the Division II final of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships at Les Murakami Stadium.

KS-Hawaii is in the championship game for the third time in the past five years after beating OIA White champion Waianae, 12-2 in five innings on Thursday.

The Warriors (14-1-1) have yet to win a state title but have never entered the final on the roll they are on now.

KS-Hawaii has outscored its first two opponents 40-7 and rolled the Seariders (13-2), who won nine of their 11 regular-season games by at least 10 runs.

"It’s not easy, trust me," Correa said. "(Our hitters) have been patient and waiting for good pitches. They’re not chasing bad pitches."

Chay Toson went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Daylen Calicdan ended the game with an RBI double down the third-base line to score Keegan Miura with one out in the fifth.

Miura was a courtesy runner for pitcher Kobi Candaroma, who hit a two-run double during a five-run third inning.

He also pitched a complete game for the Warriors, allowing two first-inning runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

"The first couple of innings I had to get adjusted to the mound, but after that my team settled me down," Candaroma said. "I zoned in with my catcher, Makoa (Rosario), who is kind of like a brother to me and helped me locate the strike zone."

Rosario, who participated in a workout in California last week, is another of many potential draft prospects next month competing in this week’s state tournament.

He hit a two-run double off Waianae starter Kekoa Kaluhiokalani in the second inning and scored twice.

"It’s our goal to win a state title and it was crazy from the first inning," Rosario said. "I couldn’t even feel my body at some points because there was so much adrenaline going."

Waianae was held to a season low in runs and had no answer for the Warriors after falling behind 11-2.

Kaluhiokalani started a day after dislocating his finger sliding into second in a 7-0 win over Hawaii Prep but lasted only 12/3 innings. He gave up just two hits but walked five and hit two others with a pitch.

"Junior tried to pitch," said his father and Waianae coach Kekoa Kaluhiokalani Sr. "I give him tons of credit for trying to go out there and pitch but he had no feel with his secondary pitches.

"He got ahead of guys but then started beaning three or four kids and at that point, I was like, ‘there is no sense in this.’ "

Catcher Darion Domingo’s RBI triple scored Kaluhiokalani for the first run and Tavita Lalau lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give the Seariders a 2-0 lead before KS-Hawaii came to bat.

The Warriors scored the game’s final 12 runs.
