Ewa’s new park includes sports fields
The Ewa community will soon be getting a new park that spans nearly 19 acres and is complete with athletic fields.
The park is more than 10 years in the making. It will have basketball and volleyball courts and a baseball field.
The improvements were a gift to the city from developer Haseko totaling more than $5 million.
The new park comes at a critical time because the James Campbell High School athletic field will close for repairs this month.
A dedication ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the corner of Keoneula Boulevard and Fort Weaver Road.
Pearl Harbor sub honored for charity work
A Pearl Harbor-based submarine is being recognized for community service work it does year-round.
The USS Buffalo is one of seven commands in the Navy to win the award.
Over the year, sailors on the Buffalo donated to the Dolphin Scholarship Fund and the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society. The society said the Buffalo had the highest per capita donation rate of any command in Hawaii.
The sailors also conducted blood drives for the Armed Services Blood Program.
The 2014 Navy Project Good Neighbor Community Service Flag Award recognizes volunteer programs and outreach projects. The Buffalo earned the honor in the small-sized sea-duty command category.
Audits reflect earlier pilikia in Kauai County
Three audit reports show Kauai County is still struggling with financial and record-keeping problems that have been raised in the past.
Honolulu-based accounting firm N&K CPAs Inc. conducted the set of audits on transactions made during 2014. At least three of the five problems highlighted appeared in previous audits, the Garden Island newspaper reported Friday.
Those problems include inaccuracies in purchasing procedures and mishandled employee time-off records.
"It’s deja vu," said County Council Chairman Mel Rapozo.
Auditors randomly inspected six departments and found that in 25 out of 60 records, vacation or sick leave hours contained discrepancies. The reports cite another issue involving errors in purchase card transactions.
