Pearl City man dies from crash
Hawaii County police identified the 69-year-old man who sustained fatal injuries in a head-on collision Wednesday in Mountain View as Hubert F. Silva of Pearl City.
Silva was driving a Ford four-door sedan when a 1995 Ford pickup truck, heading in the opposite direction and driven by a 23-year-old Keaau man, crossed the centerline and crashed into Silva’s car.
The accident occurred on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) at the 13-mile marker.
Silva was pronounced dead at 3:01 p.m. at the Hilo Medical Center.
Two others — Silva’s 64-year-old female passenger and the pickup truck driver — went to the hospital in stable condition. Four men in the pickup truck were also taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released.
Police have opened a negligent homicide and negligent injury case. The truck driver had no driver’s license and no vehicle insurance, police said.
Moths released to rein in weeds
WAILUKU » A state program aimed at knocking back a toxic weed has released more than 10,000 Madagascan fireweed moths and larvae in the past year.
Officials tell the Maui News that the program might take a decade to show noticeable effects on the fireweed choking Maui pastures.
But the weed control is in full swing. The Department of Agriculture distributed 2,500 moths on Maui in March 2013.
When left unchecked, the weed crowds out plants that livestock eat, hurting cattle and goat farms.
