Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is warning about telephone and email scams targeting KIUC customers. Commercial customers have told KIUC they received phone calls from a person warning them that their electric bill was past due and they would have to wire money immediately or their power would be shut off. KIUC officials said the utility does not initiate calls to customers about late bills, nor does KIUC request wire transfers.
Similar calls were reported in April. In addition, a KIUC customer was targeted in an email scam in January 2013. KIUC warned its customers not to provide personal, confidential or financial information to anyone when responding to unsolicited phone calls or emails. Anyone with questions is asked to call KIUC at 246-4300 or the Kauai Police Department at 241-1711.
