The Coast Guard on Monday suspended its search for a teenage boy missing near Hapuna Beach Park on Hawaii island.

“The decision to suspend our active search efforts is always difficult and was not made lightly,” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, commanding officer for Coast Guard Sector Honolulu.  

The boy, 13, was reported missing Sunday after he jumped into the ocean from a 15-foot cliff.

The Hawaii County Fire Department will continue its search Tuesday. Fire crews used a rescue boat, two helicopters and rescue divers to search the surface and below.

Crews aboard Coast Guard cutter Kiska, a 110-foot Island class patrol boat home ported in Hilo, will return to the area Tuesday and provide support to the search commander. Coast Guard Auxiliary aircraft will also be supporting the search Tuesday.

The Coast Guard began its search Sunday and covered approximately 219 square miles before suspending efforts at sunset Monday.
