KAILUA-KONA >> Fisheries regulators are considering a change in the size limit for commercial ahi.

The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources held their last in a series of meetings on that proposal and others in Kailua-Kona on Saturday.

Alton Miyasaka, acting commercial fisheries program manager for the division, said comments from other meetings favored increasing the minimum size from 3 pounds to something in the 5- to 10-pound range.

William Aila, chairman of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, said in a video shown at the meeting that it’s in the interest of fishermen to allow yellowfin to mature into a larger, more valuable product.
