Comment sought on district judge finalists
Hawaii Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald is seeking written comments on six finalists for a newly created Honolulu District Court judgeship.
Finalists are Brian A. Costa, Nelson W.S. Goo, Timothy E. Ho, Judith A. Schevtchuk, Curtis E. Sherwood and Kevin A. Souza.
Recktenwald will appoint the judge from one of the six, who were submitted to him by the Judicial Selection Commission.
The commission said seven women and nine men applied. Of the 16, seven are government lawyers and five are part-time judges.
The appointment for a six-year term is subject to state Senate confirmation.
The deadline for comment is Dec. 7. Comments will be kept confidential, the state Judiciary said.
People may send comments about the qualifications and character of the finalists to Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, Hawaii Supreme Court, 417 S. King St., Honolulu, HI 96813. Comments will also be accepted via fax at 539-4703 or email at chiefjustice@courts.hawaii.gov.
First suspect held by police in beating
Hawaii County police arrested a 20-year-old man who, along with five or six other males, allegedly beat and robbed a 26-year-old Kealakekua man Monday morning.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the other suspects.
Police said the victim reported he met a man at a bar who took him out to the parking lot to meet five or six males. The men then allegedly punched and kicked the man, allegedly stole his backpack and fled on foot at 12:27 a.m.
The man was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured jaw and minor cuts and scrapes.
On Tuesday police arrested the 20-year-old suspect, who has no local address, on suspicion of robbery.

Save water, residents urged in Kalaheo
The Kauai Department of Water asked Kalaheo residents Tuesday to reduce their water use for a two-week period while crews conduct repair and maintenance work on the Kalaheo Nursery tank.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of next week.
Affected areas include the mauka side of Kaumualii Highway from Wawae Road to Opu Road including Lae and Puuwai roads; Kikala and Kuli roads; and side streets off these roads.
Residents are asked to refrain from car-washing, reduce outdoor irrigation and take other steps to conserve water.
