WASHINGTON >> Hundreds of demonstrators held a vigil at the Newseum following the deadly attack against a satirical newspaper in Paris that killed 12, mostly journalists and cartoonists.

The demonstrators read the names of the victims in Wednesday night’s vigil and held signs that read “Je suis Charlie,” or, “I am Charlie.” The phrase is being used around the globe in reference to the name of the Parisian newspaper, Charlie Hebdo.

The Newseum also projected #JeSuisCharlie on its atrium screen as a show of support for free expression.

Newseum Chairman Peter Prichard told WTOP that the attack on the newspaper is “a blow against freedom of expression” and that the victims were innocently practicing their craft “and killed because these people don’t like what they said.”
